“Volunteering is the ultimate exercise in democracy.”
I recently had the opportunity to participate in an activity that gave me immense joy. I’m sharing my experience and hope it inspires you to find ways to give back to your communities. As part of my organization’s corporate volunteering initiative me and my team spent a day with the amazing folks at Ecosource.
Ecosource is an innovative organization which focuses on sustainability, urban agriculture and environmental education. They have designed various programs and workshops for schools, communities and corporations. Ecosource are leaders in environmental education in Peel. Their approach is to educate and train so communities can have the knowledge and skills to become personally accountable for the environment.
Our team visited their quaint little urban community garden located at St Hilary Elementary school, Fairwind Dr, Mississauga. It was a small space where the group grows a variety of herbs and vegetables.
We had a short orientation session, where we got to know about how they are involved with the community. We spent about an hour in the garden watering the plants and learning some easy and useful gardening techniques.
We then went to the kitchen where we were taught two easy to make recipes. We prepared Lemon Balm Jelly and Garlic Rosemary Crackers. I don’t remember the last time I was so excited about being in a kitchen. We chopped vegetables, juiced lemons and kneaded dough. We even learnt how canning is done. The final products are sold at farmer’s markets across Mississauga.
I’m not a cooking enthusiast by any means, but spending the day in that kitchen, working with my team and knowing that the sales from our efforts would help the community, made it an extremely enjoyable and fulfilling experience.
